How to Inspect Your Order for Possible Freight Damage

refrigerator damaged by freight

When ordering any large products shipped by common carrier freight, it is always important to inspect the delivery for damage. Equipment that ships through a freight carrier can often suffer damages. These damages occur through products being mishandled, accidentally dropped, moving around, rubbing and more. All of these issues can lead to a product being delivered with scratches, dents or other significant damages.

What most freight carriers fail to explain to the user on the receiving end, is you do have a right to refuse the product if there is noticeable damages at the time of delivery.

Failure to inspect and document damage at the time of delivery can leave you liable for return shipping and repair costs.

When receiving a product that ships through freight, make sure the assigned receiving party thoroughly inspects the product before signing for the shipment and before the freight company departs. LabRepCo cannot file claims for freight damage if you (the customer) do not identify and note the bill of lading (BOL) (delivery paperwork) and ensure the delivery driver accepts and signs.

Here are some things to look for and note on the BOL:

  • A broken pallet may mean your unit has been dropped and can cause internal damage.
  • Tilt meters indicate the unit has not remained upright in transit. They also indicate if the product has experienced a high degree of impact during transit.
  • Box crushing, holes, or tears in the outer packaging.  Photos would be helpful.
  • You have the right to refuse all or part of your shipment based on the damage. This will ultimately mean you want or need a replacement unit.
  • Without proper documentation the carrier will not honor a claim. The customer will be responsible should any damages occur.
