Class I Biological Safety Cabinets

Class I biological safety cabinets are open-front ventilated enclosures that protect laboratory personnel and the surrounding environment from biological aerosols generated during work with low-to-moderate risk microorganisms. Unlike Class II cabinets, Class I BSCs do not provide product protection. Unfiltered room air enters the work zone, making them appropriate for work where sample sterility is not required.

Class I BSCs are commonly used in procedures such as blending, sonication, or work with non-sensitive cultures where the primary goal is personnel and environmental containment. They are also used in facilities where a Class II cabinet would be oversized or over-specified for the application.
